Make Love Your Practise

Location

George Paton Gallery, University of Melbourne, Parkville, Melbourne.

Date

October 2022

Exhibited in the group show Radical Self Care and Sustainable Artmaking at George Paton Gallery, 'Make Love Your Practise' invites viewers into a simple yet profound ritual: inflating a balloon with the conscious intention of love.

The work reflects Damchö's ongoing focus on the role of intention within art-making — a practice where material action is infused with ethical and emotional consideration. Here, air itself becomes a medium for transmitting care, presence, and relationality.

Influenced by bell hooks’ proposition that love is a verb, not a noun, and by Didier Maleuvre’s reflection that love is the true vehicle of art, Make Love Your Practise quietly repositions creative action as an active engagement with love, rather than production or mastery.

The work forms part of a broader inquiry into how art can serve as a space for radical self-care, collective connection, and the small but vital gestures that sustain life and meaning.

I live, love and work on unceded Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung lands of the Eastern Kulin Nation.

My practice is shaped in relation to this place, and with deep respect for the cultural knowledge that continues to hold it. This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
